Edit/Change existing Shorty

Application: Shorty - Oct 23 2012
answered
Question:Hi there!

I'm new to Shorty and I think it's a very useful tool. I recenty tried some Shortys and played around when I came up with a question:

Is it possible to edit or change an existing Shortys target URL? The modify windows just offers to change title, status and so on.

Thanks for your (or anyones) reply.

MarMuc

Answer:Hello MarMuc,
thanks for taking interest in the Shorty app and even more for the feedback!

Clear answer: the app does not allow to change the target of an existing Shorty. Besides a few internal technical reasons this has been a design decision from when I started the implementation.

What would be the benefits of such feature? Isn't creating a new Shorty simple enough? My main concern is that usually Shortys are generated to be send out, to be posted into forums and messages. It might cause problems if such permanent starting point for a request results in different targets without any way to see if the mechnism has been altered. This appears somewhat arbitrary to me. The current solution is relatively clear in this: either the Shorty resolves to the fixed target or it is blocked (or expired) by purpose.

But it might well be that there are reaons for such feature which I did not see! So tell me! And vote for Shorty, if you like it ;-)

** UPDATE **:
Forgot to mention it, but...
Newer version of the Shorty app actually offers that feature.
It is now possible to change the target url an existing shorty points to. For this you have to click on the shown target url (which is rendered readonly first). With the click the url turns into an input field and you can change its content. That options is hinted by a pencil icon visualized at the right end of that entry.
So changing the target url requires to 'unlock' it first. That explicit action appeared to make sense to me, since changing that url should only be done in specific cases. This also prevents accidential changes to the url.
