Installation succeeds, but the app is disabled afterwards

Application: Shorty Tracking - Jan 2 2013
answered
Question:Shorty Tracking can be enabled inside the app section of the admin area in ownCloud.
However when trying to use it afterwards it appears that it is disabled again!
How come?

Answer:Indeed there are situations when the app disables itself:

Unfortunately ownCloud does not allow to check certain requirements _before_ enabling an app. So instead the app has to check itself if all requirements are met. If that is _not_ the case then the app disables itself again to prevent problems. This issue is mentioned inside ownClouds log.

Two things are required by the Shorty Tracking app:
1.) the main Shorty app being installed and enabled
2.) a minimum version of the main Shorty app

The second point usually is the problem. The reason for this is changes in the interface between the two apps. As a rule of thumb: always use the latest versions of both apps :-) So in case Shorty Tracking disables itself make sure the main Shorty app is installed and that it is the latest version awailable inside the app store.

Unfortunately again ownCloud does not yet offer upgrading of apps. That is a big problem.
You have two alternatives to upgrade Shorty AFTER DISABLING IT FIRST:
1.) there was an app that allowed to remove disabled apps from the file system. If that works for you: great! Just remove it and reenable it again in the apps section of ownClouds admin area. That should download the new version and enable it correctly. Check the version number inside the apps selection afterwards.
2.) you can also install a new version manually _if_ you have access to the servers file system. If so just look for the apps own folder. It is called shorty and found inside ownClouds apps directory. Remove all content from that shorty folder (clean it), but leave the folder itself. Download the latest version of Shorty from the app store, you get a zip archive. Extract all content of that archive into the cleaned shorty folder. The file structure inside the folder should be the same again afterwards :-) And check file permissions of manually installed files. Then reenable the Shorty app as usual.

After that you can enable Shorty Tracking and it should not disable itself any more.

Note: the installed (offered) version of an app is shown at the top inside the apps section of the admin area. In addition you can find that version number inside the apps files: there is a separate file appinfo/version. Also the version is specified inside the declaration file appinfo/infi.xml. If you are in doubt if you have the latest version of Shorty check in the app store (Shorty links its home location inside its gui: the home button to the upper right inside the top controls panel).

Have fun!

Oh, and if you like the apps: vote for the inside the app store!
That is to developers like applause is to actions on a stage :-)
