I love KDE 3.5x

KDE
Description:

I love multiple wallpaper on multiple desktop, with scroll button.
I love Quicklauncher, and all the quick drag and drop functions.
I love superkaramba with all the simple functions.
I have a top computer but kde4 is so slow.... The menu is so unperspicuity.
Kde4 have many spectacular visual effect, but for what?
During work, after 10 min, I shot down all effect, since too slow, and too embarrassing (or too ugly).
I love all the Ctrl+scroll functions,on kde3.5, and all the clocks....

Résumé: not everyone have a hyperspace computer, and new distros, with kde, must
have alternative for kde3.5 AND kde4.

Debian Lenny is way old news, its already time for squeeze to be moved to stable. Newer kernels and other unimportant upgrades dont impress me much when you are still stuck using old debian stable pkgs. Not much of a kanotix fan.

As for KDE 3.5.10 ruling, I agree. I have multiple, twin test machines running side by side to do a comparison of kde4 and the last kde3. KDE 3 is far more productive, adaptable, and far less confusing to the new user (I test stuff on noobie volunteers switching from MS windows). So far, out of 80 test vol, only 3 preferred KDE4 (because "it was more like windows").

I'm looking for a kde3 only distro that doesn't plan to update to kde4. Does anyone know of one?

If there's a devel out there looking to start such a distro, I have about 40 test machines available to test the distro, plus about 40 to 45 users who will road test the distro in a RW environment.

like KDE4. I don't calim is it bad or useless because it isn't.

I recently got new laptop and installed openSuSE 11.3 with KDE4 to it. So let me start.

Gwenview, it feels so gluttered and fancy to me. Nice fade outs and useless slide shows, the new UI just feels 'uneasy', ok now somebody stands up and screams "you can customize it", jeah you can, but my point is, what was wrong with the old one?
Why have they gone to wrong direction, in my opinion of course.

Amarok, I dont even go there...much. 'Old' Amarok just welt righ, UI contained what I needed and that was it. Now it's full of useless features and extra funcional(complex) playlist. Oh and so the backend, Xine/alsa worked for me, so can I? "Settings -> Configure Amarok... -> Output Plugin, or Speaker Arragement" NOpe (I don't know how, so please if this is possible tell me)

And then my favorite Xine/alsa, continues with rant of Kaffeine. I start to sound like old people fighting the inevitable. But that's how I feel. So There's is a nice folder view, playlist and video square. Double click the video I would like to see and "nothing happened.. mabe I didn't pressed twice, no I did" -> OH you have to move it to the playlist so you can play it, I just ask is this progression, or something else?(this can't be just openSuSE feature)

And then there is that thing we old people used to call the "desktop" place where you could tempporary save useless things, but you know what, now there is plain desktop, desktop, folder view and other FABULOUS things. >:)

Oh and almoust forgot the kmail. Now the mails are categorisez by days, so you have to expand the days mail you like to see without a search. Hmm.. what was again wrong with the old way of gazing screen full list of mail and quicly see what you were looking for, and IF NOT then use the search, again what was wrong with the old defaults? Sure, again you probably can change it but.. why is the dafault gone backward.

I'm comign to my point here. I don't hate or despice progression, butI have gave a fair share of change to KDE4 and still... I feel the old one was better, why? That majority of KDE users have to ask them selfs.

The final point is that, I disslike the new KDE4 so much that I bothered to write this forum letter -> because I feel so dissatissfied with the direction of the progression the new KDE has taken that I had to put it to some where.

ps: Maybe it's just me and I'm too old to understand progression or something...

I couldn't agree with you more. The "defaults" for kde4 are based on this eye candy competition GUIs have going on now.

Defaults were once indented to be functional, not anymore. Now its about flash, dazzle, and cool effects.

Ultimately, for the genuine KDE user, none of this is useful. It seems the target "audience" for kde has moved from the user, to the viewer.

I have my kde 3.5.10 setup to such a functional degree, I am able to get my work done in minutes, compared to hours. The kde4 interface, lacks genuine, functional, intuitiveness and organization. Its now about the look of, and not the functionality of...

As for the real improvements of kde4, they are lost in bad execution, and poor final layer design. Which is sad considering some of the stuff is great, really great.

KDE was once a labour of love, and invention. Now its a labour of ego, competition and a touch of arrogance.

Those resurrecting kde 3.x are gaining members, devels and ground, and its BECAUSE they ask, people what they want.

I have little use for plasmoids, but I do use the top bar ( OSX like top bar ) a lot. I put files on my desktop as I'm working on them. I don't have application icons, but I do have files. I also like that Desktop is an actual directory. Simple and clean.

Too much useless tech. What's the point of it?

The above isn't intended to diminish the works of any kde devel or team, its only intended to get them to think about it.

I'll stick to kde 3.x.

Rant over...

I'm mostly with you guys. KDE 3.5.x is all I really need.

I run mine dual-headed on Fedora 7 w/a later Centos 5 kernel and compiz-fusion. I like that spinning thing and emerald. I also run 3.5.10 on openSUSE 11.1 for my little laptop.

KDE4 is too cumbersome for me. The plasmoids are lots on symbolism and little on substance. Things that worked fine on KDE3 are now broken on KDE 4, and since I actually use my computers for something other than testing out new software and performing upgrqades, I need software that works.

I once tried building KDE4 from source, in an alternate location, but it's intertwined with GNOME to such an extent that the two are almost inseparable. If you need only one ot two programs, it's easier to use VMs.

I do use a lot of Qt4 apps. That's the beauty of Qt. It doesn't obsolete you. So, in addition to 3.3.8b, I'm running Qt4.6.3 without any problems whatsoever.

The only KDE4 app that I desire to run is a blogging client called blogilo, and I run that on VMware Server 1, with Fedora 12. If a version of blogilo is ever written for Qt alone, I'll go to it and use the space consumed by Fedora 12 and KDE 4 for something useful.

Personally, I would have rather seen KDE fork into two separate projects. One to maintain KDE3 and the other to go wherever KDE4 is going.

It would have been interesting to see which fork attracted more users.

Nevertheless, I just like things that work, and KDE 3.5.x works.

I agree with you. Like you, I also use my computer for more common forms of work. Such as graphics, desktop publishing, etc and I need things to work. KDE4 just has too many missing, broken or unusably modified apps.

Once again, however, its sad how the good stuff it does have to offer, is so over shadowed by bad decisions.

I read your comments and what came to my mind was advertising slogan for KDE3, "When you need to get work done, KDE 3.5.x. It just works" It's the overall feeling that everything works without a hassle and hussle.

ps: three weeks active usage of KDE4 and still I trust the three series. Hopefully KDE 3.5.x projects that are keeping it alive doesn't die because the lack of interest.

ps²: laptop + KDE4 = showing of efects and boasting, KDE3 on main computer to get the work done. :)

One good start for making four better would be adding all the settings features that were available on kde three to number four -> just today I was searching the cache setting from kde4 dolphin and nope it doesn't seem to be there and that's a shame. Because I see no point removing good usefull features.

over and out.

OK, the first versions of kde4 were out to soon to use it properly
but since 4.3 it's OK !
I'm using Gentoo since 2005 and I tried all WM and every time I was returned to KDE
When KDE4 was available I wanted to try it and I was hooked by it ...well, I was needed to wait for 4.3 to switch from 3.5
Can't tell you specifically what I like more at kde4 against 3.5 but I can tell you that kde4 gave me all the features I wanted kde3.5 to have.

OH, yes...and how I love the kde4 uncluttered desktop!! Thx God that my wife don't know that is possible to switch to the old way folder view desktop!!

In the end, I am wandering why someone looking for "such a high productivity" as some claim, is using KDE either 3.5 or 4 ??!! when there are XFCE or IceWM for that...

My conclusion is that KDE4 is a big step forward....
Haha! I imagine the future when KDE4 users will complain about the KDE 5 !
